Whether it is meeting at the office, at the hospital, in someone’s home, or through a Zoom call, the clients at McLeish Orlando LLP will always take precedence.
“The client is paramount,” says Patrick Brown, one of the partners at the firm. “Whatever place, or through whatever mode, we’ll make it happen.”
Dale Orlando, one of the firm’s founders, agrees. “There are a lot of benefits do remote hearings and virtual meetings,” he says, “including from an access to justice standpoint.”
But what both lawyers have noticed is that over the past two years, during the COVID-19 pandemic, more clients are choosing virtual meetings, at least during the initial stage. “The vast majority of people we deal with are getting used to these types of meetings,” says Brown. “They feel a lot more comfortable.”
And for those who aren’t comfortable with virtual meetings, the in-person option is always there, says Brown, especially as things open up again in what is hoped to be a post-COVID world.

Orlando points out that the pandemic helped “drag an antiquated court system into the 21st century,” and having remote tools available has increased, or at least maintained, productivity at the firm.
“We had some concerns at the beginning but as it turned out, it turned out really well.” The firm now has a permanent hybrid system, with staff either coming in Mondays and Tuesdays, or Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays are left optional or for times when all staff need to be together.
“People seem quite happy with the system,” he says, “it’s the best of both worlds. The one difference is that staff might use some hours in the day to attend to errands, but work in the evening.”
This increased flexibility and productivity also has benefits for clients, Brown says. Fewer travel costs need to be covered, and there is the potential for things to move along more quickly. And at McLeish Orlando, the efficiencies can mean more time to work on cases, as the actual caseload hasn’t increased.
Brown says some of the efficiencies can also be directed at creating a work-life balance that makes for a happier work environment. “Our philosophy has been ‘bigger is not necessarily better,’ and lower volume and better-quality work [is best for us].”
Having a more relaxed environment, where lawyers and staff aren’t working seven days a week, is also a great tool for recruiting the best talent, says Orlando.
Brown agrees: “We want to attract young lawyers coming out of law school who are the best in class. By offering that our workplace is efficient, has the right technology, it can be a great selling feature to a younger generation.”
Maintaining a healthy workplace culture even with COVID-19 making things more difficult is important at McLeish Orlando. “That’s why regular town halls, celebrations of birthdays, and ensuring that there is both formal and informal mentoring of younger lawyers is crucial,” says Orlando.
Philanthropy also goes a long way in creating the glue that keeps McLeish Orlando’s team together. Orlando says the firm regularly gives to trauma centres at hospital associations representing those whose lives have been impacted by serious injuries.
“We’ve also taken a real interest in making sure that kids who need a bike helmet but can’t afford it can get one,” says Orlando. “Yes, the firm represents those who have been seriously injured, but helping prevent those injuries in the first place is just as important.”
Whether it is meeting at the office, at the hospital, in someone’s home, or through a Zoom call, the clients at McLeish Orlando LLP will always take precedence.
