Thorsteinssons LLP has earned a reputation as Canada’s premier law firm dedicated exclusively to taxation law.
With over 70 lawyers across offices in Vancouver and Toronto, it is the largest tax-focused firm in the country. Thorsteinssons LLP has delivered exceptional legal services for over six decades, earning consistent recognition for its expertise and client-centred approach.
Founded in Vancouver in 1964 by PN (Pat) Thorsteinsson, the firm expanded in 1990 by opening a Toronto office to serve its national client base better. It was then and continues to be Canada’s only national tax-only law firm.
“While we’re a boutique, we operate like a full-service firm within the tax space,” says managing partner James Murdoch. “We cover every aspect of tax law, from corporate tax advice and planning, personal tax and estate planning, sales and commodity taxes, customs and international trade, to dispute resolution and litigation. Tax is all we do, and that focus allows us to deliver the specialized expertise our clients need.”
Thorsteinssons provides tax advice of the highest quality to clients worldwide, and its close client relationships afford the legal team the in-depth knowledge of client businesses necessary to deliver the advice that clients require.
The firm’s award-winning approach centres on its ability to tackle the complexity of tax law. Canadian Lawyer has recognized the firm as one of the Top Tax Law Boutiques in every edition since 2015. Its lawyers are consistently recognized among the country’s leading tax practitioners.
The firm remains committed to navigating the constant legislative changes that define the field, which are complex and often unclear, and can create significant uncertainty for clients.
“But this is also where we excel, by staying ahead and providing clarity,” notes Murdoch.
A defining feature of Thorsteinssons is its boutique model, which minimizes conflicts of interest and enables the firm to build strong referral relationships with other professionals in the legal and accounting fields.
The firm’s depth across all areas of tax law, combined with its collaborative culture, has been instrumental in maintaining its leadership position. From individual tax planning to large-scale corporate matters and high-stakes litigation, Thorsteinssons provides comprehensive solutions tailored to each client’s needs.
“Our success ultimately comes down to people,” emphasizes Murdoch. “We’ve made significant investments in recruiting and training top-tier talent to ensure we remain at the forefront of tax law. The expertise and dedication of our team allow us to consistently deliver the high-quality service our clients have come to expect.”
The firm aims to provide clients with valuable solutions promptly and efficiently. Working together, the team members share an uncompromising commitment to excellence in everything they do.
“We’re committed to delivering the highest level of service, assuring clients that their welfare is the firm’s utmost priority”
