Beitel has extensive experience advising and representing clients dealing with alleged housing flips, and audits based on net-worth analyses and tax residency. He has helped numerous clients come forward safely through the voluntary disclosures program, especially in relation to unreported foreign assets. While his clients come from all industries, they are frequently in construction, trades, hospitality, and cryptocurrency.

James Rhodes’s practice focuses exclusively on tax dispute resolutions, specifically in tax disputes relating to charges of tax evasion, voluntary disclosure program applications, taxpayer relief requests, rectification applications, and providing tax opinions on accounting positions to help ensure a taxpayer’s filing position remains statute barred. He practices across all areas of tax including ITA, HST/GST, SRED, director’s liability assessments, net worth assessments, rectification applications, employee vs. independent contractor determinations. Formerly a clerk of the Tax Court of Canada, and subsequently a lawyer with the Department of Justice, Rhodes brings a full resolution perspective to matters he is involved in.

Brian Nichols has practiced in tax law for decades and is frequently called upon to find creative solutions to tax-related errors and omissions, including by LawPRO, Ontario’s mandatory legal malpractice insurer. He has written and presented extensively on tax topics, and his work was relied upon by the Supreme Court of Canada in setting down its pivotal test for the existence of a business in Stewart v. The Queen. He is a member of the program committee for the Ontario Tax Conference of the Canadian Tax Foundation.

Beitel Tax Law’s core values of collaboration, care, innovation, excellence, and professionalism underpin every aspect of its work. Unlike traditional law firms, the legal leaders have structured their practice to break down internal silos, ensuring every client benefits from the entire team’s expertise.
Beitel Tax Law has earned a reputation as a strategic partner that delivers service excellence beyond legal advice, ensuring every client interaction is thoughtful, professional, and efficient. The firm has also deliberately chosen to specialize in the owner-manager space rather than attempting to cover all areas of tax law.
A significant difference between Beitel Tax Law and other firms is its approach to billable hours, which sets dramatically lower targets.
“These lower targets allow everyone on our team to work on the practice, rather than just in their practice, while also enabling our team to fulfill their goals and responsibilities outside of the office,” managing director Jeremie Beitel says.
This model allows the firm to focus on continuous improvement, examining past outcomes, refining methods, and ensuring client service and internal operations are as effective as possible.
“Our clients value our ability to simplify complex tax issues and our commitment to supporting them through every step of the process, be it audit, objection, litigation, or implementing a tax plan”

“We believe expertise and results are baseline expectations for a tax boutique,” he adds. “We recognize that our clients don’t want to become tax experts themselves; they want practical answers they can implement. We try to meet them on their terms and ensure we always push their file forward rather than wait for us.”
Despite its rapid growth, Beitel Tax Law has strengthened its collaborative and team-driven culture. Its lawyers regularly discuss tax court decisions, share insights, and exchange ideas on complex files.
“Delivering for our clients means understanding their unique challenges and providing solutions that align with their goals,” Beitel says. “Our clients value our ability to simplify complex tax issues and our commitment to supporting them through every step of the process, be it audit, objection, litigation, or implementing a tax plan.”
The firm also places a strong emphasis on training and professional development. Through formal and informal mentoring, a robust teaching program, and a commitment to ensuring associates gain exposure to a variety of files, it helps its lawyers develop a well-rounded skill set and confidence early in their careers to handle complex tax matters.
Beitel Tax Law’s commitment to excellence has earned it recognition as one of Canadian Lawyer’s Top Tax Law Boutiques of 2025. It is also one of the few firms with two lawyers directly referenced by the Supreme Court of Canada in a tax decision, reflecting the practice’s depth of knowledge and expertise
