Troy takes great satisfaction in helping seriously injured people and their families through difficult times. The cases that Troy finds most gratifying are the difficult cases where there is a need to be especially creative and determined to obtain the compensation that his clients need. Oatley Vigmond LLP approaches trial advocacy long before stepping into a courtroom. The firm’s five core values – compassion, integrity, innovation, excellence, and leadership – continue to shape its culture and reputation.
In 2025, Canadian Lawyer once again recognized the firm as one of the country’s Top Personal Injury Boutiques.
Founded by Roger Oatley and Jim Vigmond, the firm has become one of Canada’s most respected personal injury practices, with a deep bench of lawyers known for landmark verdicts, precedent-setting decisions, and a client-first model that has changed how injury law is delivered.
From the outset of a case, the firm takes a practical and personal approach focused on helping clients navigate recovery, not just litigation.
“In the early days after a catastrophic injury or death of a family member, the firm’s clients are worried about how to rebuild their lives, not a trial a few years away,” explains Brian Cameron, partner.
That insight shaped a distinctive approach of pairing lawyers with highly trained accident benefits specialists. These former insurance adjusters work directly with clients to secure treatment, support, and funding as early as possible.
Many of the firm’s most experienced partners have spent their entire careers at Oatley Vigmond. Cameron and Robert Durante have practiced there for over 25 years. Other senior partners joined the firm after practicing elsewhere. Adam Little and Troy Lehman started their careers as defence lawyers but have now been at Oatley Vigmond for almost 20 years.
The firm has achieved record-setting jury awards, shaped legal precedent through key appeals, and led high-profile cases that advanced the law around catastrophic impairment and insurance coverage. One such case, Little v. Sinton, involved a Grade 8 student who sustained a brain injury after jumping from the back of a school bus, a dangerous tradition never stopped by the adults in charge.
After careful jury focus group testing, the firm narrowed its case to a single defendant and used testimony from released parties to strengthen its argument. The jury delivered the largest verdict ever in Barrie for an injured child, which was 14 times higher than the defence offer.

Another defining moment came in McIsaac v. MacKinnon, a medical malpractice case involving delayed diagnosis of a rare metabolic disorder in a newborn. The defence moved to strike the jury, claiming the case was too complex. The firm fought to keep the jury and won. Weeks later, the case was settled in the middle of the trial.
“Many things made me want to join Oatley Vigmond,” recalls Lehman. “But one of the biggest reasons was the time and money they devote to trial preparation. Because of the firm’s success, it has the resources to out-prepare insurance companies.”
Throughout the practice, leaders stress professionalism, compassion, and realism. Clients are prepared for trial with care and clarity.
“The partners at Oatley Vigmond explain to clients that they are both their advocates and risk managers,” says partner Little.
Jim Vigmond has been a driving force in shaping the firm’s legacy, bringing unwavering dedication to personal injury litigation and securing landmark victories that have set new precedents in Canada. His commitment to justice, philanthropy, and mentorship has left an indelible mark on his colleagues, ensuring that his values continue to guide the firm. As he steps into retirement with the joy of family at the forefront, he leaves behind a team that shares his passion and dedication, poised to carry forward the traditions he so carefully built.
With a team of nearly 100 people, the firm’s strength comes from collaboration as much as from courtroom skill. Every client benefits from that collective experience and from a culture built on decades of leadership that still sets the tone today.
