Complex criminal defence, particularly in cases where credibility determines the outcome, defines the work at Neuberger & Partners LLP. The firm has been named one of Canadian Lawyer’s Top Criminal Law Boutiques 2026 and is recognized for handling matters involving sexual assault, domestic allegations, and multi-count prosecutions with a disciplined, evidence-led approach.
The firm operates as a specialized criminal defence practice rather than a general litigation shop. Its lawyers focus on building cases through detailed factual work, testing assumptions, and refining defence strategies before they reach the courtroom. Lawyers take ownership of each file, working collaboratively to challenge inconsistencies and develop a position grounded in the record.
Leadership defines how that standard is set and sustained across the firm. Founding partner Joseph Neuberger, a certified specialist in criminal law with more than three decades of experience, established the firm’s focus on preparation and cross-examination.
Alongside him, partners Michael Bury and Yuvika Johri bring complementary perspectives that shape how complex matters are approached, combining trial and appellate experience with evolving expertise in evidentiary and constitutional issues. Together, they drive a model grounded in shared analysis and disciplined execution.
That approach is reflected in how files are prepared. The firm places a strong emphasis on cross-examination, disclosure analysis, and identifying gaps that can alter the course of a case. This is reflected in outcomes such as R. v. N.B., where the firm secured a full acquittal in a multi-count sexual assault prosecution.
The decision turned on findings that the complainant’s evidence was unreliable, that objective evidence contradicted key allegations, and that the police investigation was deficient. The court’s reasoning reinforced the presumption of innocence and the Crown’s burden of proof.
“Clients are not only kept informed, but involved in the process where appropriate, whether that involves reviewing disclosure, preparing for testimony, or understanding the broader legal strategy,”
Joseph Neuberger,
Neuberger & Partners LLP
