FROM WORKING side by side with lawyers on the floor hearing about their frustrations with existing processes, to onboarding new clients and fielding customer support calls, Malcolm Muthulingum has a broad portfolio of experience at LEAP, and his background has fuelled his commitment to LEAP’s vision and passion for advancing the legal industry toward an era of efficiency.
“Everything around us has advanced – you don’t go to the bank, you use your app – and that’s true of every industry in our lives except legal,” says Muthulingum, chief executive officer of LEAP Legal Software Canada. “It’s time we invested in this. We are asked a lot if AI will eventually replace lawyers and the answer is definitely not – but lawyers who use AI will replace lawyers who don’t.”
Canadian Lawyer sat down with LEAP leaders to discuss the future of legal practice management, the company’s approach to what they do, and how their recently released AI solutions can be seamlessly integrated to transform daily workflows.

activities – client interactions and strategic case management – or, as we like to say, doing more lawyering than paperwork.
Our goal and our hope is to help law firms deliver superior legal services, reduce their operational costs, and achieve productivity gains – again, ultimately growing business and client satisfaction for them.
MM: There’s a lot of talk around AI and what’s happening in the market, but delivery is where most people are struggling – there are a lot of white papers out there, but not a lot of products. LEAP has always been at the forefront of technology around the globe, and the advancement of AI is no different. We’re leading the way with product that is tangible, useable, and testable by our clients.
What is it changing at this point? It’s improving a lawyer’s lifestyle by making their job easier through automating routine tasks. What will it eventually lead to? Better cost savings, improved client services, more efficient case management, enhanced competitiveness, and, ultimately, greater growth of their business.
MM: It is the motivating force for LEAP right now to deliver as many of the benefits AI can possibly provide to make our clients’ lives better. Our vision is to advance how legal practice management has been working for many, many years. We want to enhance three key areas: efficiency, accuracy, and profitability. If we can get a law firm more efficient day to day, get them more accurate, and get them making more money, we’ll also make them very happy.
By integrating advanced AI tools for LEAP, we kill routine and repetitive tasks, provide instant insights, and streamline
workflows. This allows lawyers to focus on higher-value
MM: Balancing innovation with responsibility is an important factor for us. Speak to anyone in the market and they’ll tell you the same: AI is still in its infancy stage. As much as others may be looking forward, at LEAP we’re building AI responsibly. For us that means professional oversight and strong data security measures.
We use qualified lawyers to verify output, prioritize confidentiality – we don’t rely on third-party solutions; we have our own team to ensure all LEAP data is well-protected – and monitor any improvements to ensure we’re meeting ethical as well as professional standards. We empower law firms with a reliable tool while maintaining integrity – a main tenant for us here at LEAP. Our clients can trust us with what they put in and what they get out.

MM: LawY and Matter AI stand out among competitors because of a unique combination of advanced AI technology and human expertise – and together enhance those key metrics of efficiency, accuracy, and productivity, allowing lawyers to focus on strategic aspects of their practice and deliver superior client service.
Matter AI is included with LEAP; from solo practitioners to
large law firms, it really will improve the quality of your work.
To close out the conversation, Canadian Lawyer asked this of John Espley, chairman & CEO of LEAP UK & Canada: How do we demystify AI in law, shedding light on how such tools are revolutionizing legal tasks and why, no matter the role, AI should be an inseparable component of a lawyer's toolkit?

Leveraging the latest AI algorithms, it provides instant insights by analyzing data like documents, emails, spreadsheets, attachments, and even handwritten notes. It offers a robust search capability and is able to check matter details and dates, summarize documents, extract key terms and concepts, analyze financial transactions, and provide a chronology. And whether it’s 10 or 10,000 documents, Matter AI delivers a detailed response within seconds.
Here’s a practical example: a family law lawyer gets a call from a client wanting to know how much parenting time their former spouse has missed over the last few months. Instead of putting the phone down to have a member of the staff comb through thousands of documents to figure out the answer, the lawyer can chat with Matter AI by typing in the question and receive an instant response. That saves an enormous amount of time for any lawyer in any case, and all answers are tracked to ensure accuracy and peace of mind.
LawY is a companion product and deals primarily with legal research and document preparation. To go back to our example above, once the lawyer knows how much parenting time has been missed, they can look up relevant case law or next steps. The LawY difference is the verification process. With the click of a button, whatever it sourced goes anonymously to a lawyer based in the same province as our client, who checks the information. Once it’s verified, the information is stored in our database and will be referred to if anybody else has the same question.
What feedback have you received from clients?
MM: We introduced the AI products only a few months ago, but they’re already catching on. Our clients are loving it and using it on a day-to-day basis. And we do believe that this is the future. We have one client, a family law practitioner, who has gone completely paperless by using LEAP for all his documents – it’s a law firm with no paper. He does demos and attends panels with us, and we’re hearing more and more stories like his. AI advancements support that approach.
JE: AI is reshaping the legal profession by enhancing efficiency, automating tasks, and ensuring accuracy through AI tools. These technologies are essential for lawyers, enabling them to deliver faster, more precise legal services and focus on strategic aspects of their practice. Embracing AI isn’t just beneficial –it’s crucial for staying competitive and meeting the evolving demands of the legal industry.
Al is not a replacement for the expertise and judgment of a qualified lawyer. Instead, it’s a powerful tool that can augment your capabilities and transform the way you practice law. As Malcolm said, AI won’t replace you, but a lawyer using AI will.
